How to Select Cooling Tower Capacity?

Cooling Tower:

Cooling tower is a heat rejection device which extracts waste heat to the atmosphere through the cooling of a water stream to a lower temperature.

Purpose of cooling tower:

  1. To cool the liquid at the desired temperature.
  2. To supply the liquid to the predefined machine.
  3. To keep the temperature within working level.
  4. To reject the waste heat to the atmosphere.

Capacity calculation:

Cooling load of cooling tower= ms∆T

Where,

m  =mass flow rate (Kg/s)

s    = specific heat (J/kg-K) [for water 4200 J/kg-K]

∆T =Temperature difference (K)

[Generally the temperature difference is kept within (4-6) K]

Unit Conversion:

Load=Kg/s * J/Kg-K * K

=Kg*J*K/s*Kg-K

=J/s= watt=watt/1000=  kilowatt=kilowatt/3.5= ton
